Animal Jam Academy - Koalas

Hi it's Twistered with an Animal Jam Academy post from the Daily Explorer

!aja_koala

Though they are sometimes called koala bears, koalas are not related to bears at all. Their closest relative are wombats, which are also not related to bears. Koalas got this nickname because their faces and soft fur sometimes make them resemble teddy bears.

Koalas live in Australia’s eucalyptus forests, and each koala’s home is made up of several trees called home trees. Koalas visit these same trees regularly, and the area covered by these trees is called their home range. Each koala has its own home range, and though their range may overlap with other koala’s ranges, they normally don’t visit each other’s trees. The size of a koala’s home range depends on a range of factors, including the quality of the habitat, and the age and social position of the koala.

These home ranges are especially important to koalas because their diets consist almost entirely of eucalyptus leaves. Koalas even get all the water they need from the leaves they eat! In ideal circumstances, koalas spend their entire lives in their trees, and they are rarely seen on the ground.

Animal Jam HQ & A - Kelp

It's Twistered with a AJHQ&A video from the Daily Explorer

Watch the video here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGAREtKQLKw

In this week’s AJHQ+A, Enchanted Rockyproud asks Tierney Thys: “Is kelp a seaweed?”

If the conditions are right, some kelp can grow one and a half feet per day! When a large area is covered in kelp, it is called a kelp forest. Like tree forests, kelp forests provide food and shelter for many animals, including fish, mammals like seals and whales, and even some birds! When all these creatures come together, they create an ocean community that is almost bigger than any other underwater biome!

Jamaa Animals - Hyena

It's Twistered with a brand new animal, the hyena , this post is from the Daily Explorer

Watch the video here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpTRfIQ5UqQ

Hyenas are the newest animals to make their home in Jamaa!

Hyenas are very social animals that live in large clans of related families. The dens are the hubs of clan activity where the cubs are raised and individuals meet. These dens tend to be in the middle of the territory on the highest ground available. They will house the entire clan and are connected underground with tunnels.

Hyenas are always communicating with each other and use specific calls and signals, one of them being the infamous laugh. Hyenas use this laughing call to signal a food source and can be heard up to 3 miles away!

Let’s give Hyenas a warm Animal Jam welcome and Play Wild!

Creature Feature - Slow Loris

It's Twistered from Animal Jam with a post from the Daily Explorer

Watch the video here

www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LHspUhq17o

The slow loris may look sweet and adorable, but they are, in fact, venomous! This trait is extremely rare in mammals and the loris is one of only a few animals to have this ability. It’s also the world’s only venomous primate. They have a gland on their elbow that they can lick to secrete a fluid that mixes with their saliva in order to produce their toxin. Separately, the fluids are harmless.

The slow loris has few predators because of their toxic nature, the sun bear being one of them. There is typically little interaction between the two as lorises live in trees and sun bears use dens, but their love of honey is known to create some competition around the hives.

Rare Item Monday - Multi-Coloured Rare Moustache

Hi it's Twistered with a Rare Item Monday from the Daily Explorer

!RIM_mous_ANI

Today’s Rare Item is this magnificent multi-colored Rare Moustache! It wouldn’t be Rare Item Monday with out it!

The Emperor tamarin is one of the smallest monkey species. The largest only measured twelve inches and weighed two pounds. Most Emperor tamarins are only about six inches tall and weigh about a half of a pound.

Perhaps it is because of their elegant and and regal white moustache! This moustache was thought to resemble that of German Emperor Wilhelm II.

Animal Jam Pet - Hummingbirds

Hi it's Twistered with a pet post from the Daily Explorer

!template_news_sketch
Pet hummingbirds are the newest addition to the pets of Jamaa!

Did you know that Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world?

At rest their heart beats 250 times per minute. When flying it can beat as fast as 1,260 times per minute! Their wings also flap fast, about 80 times per second! It takes a lot of energy to be this fast and hummingbirds need a lot of food.

Hummingbirds can remember where every flower they visit is growing. They also know how long it takes for that flower to renew its nectar after they drink it all up!

Their long beaks help them get to center of the flowers they like to eat and they lap up the nectar with their tongues!

Animal Jam Academy - Kangaroos

Hello it's Twistered with a post off the Daily Explorer

!aja_kangaroo_blog

Did you know that kangaroos can’t move backwards.

Kangaroos live in the Australian Outback which is a wide open space. And they have a mode of travel that they have adapted for this kind of environment: they use ‘saltatory locomotion.’ They JUMP! Kangaroos can jump up to thirty feet at a time and have large back feet and a long tail that they use to counterbalance their bodies. You might even say that kangaroos are built to jump…forward. They can also move left or right with ease, but they cannot walk or jump backward. In fact they don’t walk at all, only jumps, large or small.

The reason is simple, that huge tail is in the way!

Kangaroos can, however, swim. Maybe that can be a consolation.

Download this activity from AJ Academy to have more fun learning about kangaroos!

Animal Jam HQ & A - Narwhals

Hello jammers, it's Twistered with a AJHQ&A from the Daily Explorer

Watch the video here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8YdybBVOEc

Lucky Daisycloud asks Tierney Thys ‘why do narwhals have horns?’

The narwhal is referred to as the ‘unicorn of the ocean’ for several reasons: one obvious reason is its long tusk. The second is that it is one of the rarest whales in the world. And narwhals tend to be mysterious and elusive in nature.

So elusive in fact that they can dive nearly one-and-a-half miles deep and spend five months of the year under the ice of the Arctic Circle!

Jammer Art - Butterflies

Hi it's Twistered with some Jammer Art!

!art_butter_blog_ANI

Snowflake Thepanda, Mythical Cleverwolf, Empress Daisylady, Fuzzy Peachybunny, Mythical Snowyanimal, we are honored to welcome you to the ever growing group of talented individuals that create art in the land of Jamaa!!

This round of drawings features pet butterflies! Do you have a pet butterfly?

Caterpillars and butterflies smell with their antennae and taste with their feet and don’t have noses or lungs like a lot of animals. Insects have tiny holes in the sides of their bodies called ‘spiracles,’ that draw oxygen into their bodies and into a trachea. Their blood also doesn’t carry oxygen like ours, because they’re so small the trachea system is enough to distribute oxygen through their bodies.

Creature Feature - Box Turtles

Hi guys it's Twistered with a Creature Feature post from the Daily Explorer

Watch the video here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAFs5yc0nOA

Dr. Brady Barr and his daughter find a clutch of baby box turtles!

Box turtles have a unique hinged shell. The hinge allows them to actually seal their shell when threatened. Most turtles and tortoises can retract into their shells but this still leaves parts of their legs exposed. This special hinged shell makes them practically impervious (im·per·vee·uss, unable to be affected) from predators as adults.

On the rare occasion that a predator is successful, box turtles can also be dangerous to eat. A large part of their diet often includes poisonous mushrooms which are not harmful to them, but do become part of the turtle’s blood and, therefore, toxic to predators.

Rare Item Monday - Sapphire Elf Armour

Hi it is Twistered with a post on the Daily Explorer

!RIM_elf_armor

The art of melting and moulding metals is called ‘metallurgy.’ Shaping metals into shapes by heating and hammering, like a blacksmith, is called ‘forging.’

The earliest metals; gold, silver, copper and iron were used by the Egyptians, and Romans, with copper and gold being the most widely used. The romans were the first to develop armor and is was largely used for decoration and exclusively for royalty. Copper and gold are very soft metals and are not ideal for protecting our soft bodies.

The use of hard metals, like iron, didn’t come into wide use until the middle ages. This is also when chain mail armor becomes popular because it offered better mobility that traditional plate armor, although it weighed nearly twice as much!

Although we don’t have much use for armor in our daily lives, chainmail is still used in a variety of activities. Scuba divers will ofter wear chainmail to protect themselves from shark bites!
What kind of material do you think the sapphire Rare Elf Armor is made from?

Animal Jam Academy – Our Solar System

Hello it's Twistered with a post from the Daily Explorer

!aja_solar

It’s estimated that there are hundreds to thousands of dwarf planets in our solar system. Currently there are only five that are officially recognized: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris.

Dwarf planets orbit the sun like regular planets but they are much, much smaller. Smaller even than the Earth’s moon, but they are not moons. So small that if the Earth was the size of a nickel, a dwarf planet would be no bigger than the head of a pin. Do you have a nickel and pin? Put them next to each other to compare the size.

Some of the dwarf planets have their own moons that are even smaller! Pluto has five, Haumea has two and Eris has one.

You can find the dwarf planets in the Kuiper Belt, a collection of asteroids on the edge of our solar system past the orbit of Neptune.

Download and learn more about our solar system from AJ Academy.

Jamaa Adventures - Forgotten Desert

Hey guys it's Twistered posting a post from the Daily Explorer

!eagle_adventures

The Forgotten Desert. Long ago, it was a thriving and lush land that was protected by five special crystals. But after the Phantoms invaded, they shattered the crystals and caused the land to become barren and desolate.

The Phantoms now guard the land and the crystal shards that are hidden within. Fortunately for us, there is a short window during which the Phantoms switch guards. During this time, we need all the eagles of Jamaa to fly high above the desert and collect the crystal shards!

Do you and your buddies have the speed and agility to help reform the crystals and save The Forgotten Desert? Find out in Jamaa’s newest Adventure!

Jammer Art - Pets

Hey guys it's Twistered with a Jammer Art post from the Daily Explorer

!art_pets

This week Jammer Art highlights PETS and the works of Eternal Frozenflower, Mighty Strongcat, Enchanted Magicspirit, Fabulous Frozenmoon, and Lucky Rainybug!

There are more than 100 million pets in the United States. That’s nearly 2/3 of its residents being pet keepers. Some pets can also be helpers, like sled or seeing eye dogs. Dogs are very eager to please and can thrive with good training! Cats on the other hand are a different matter.

During the summer of 1879 in Liège, Belgium, the postal service attempted to train 37 cats to deliver sacks of mail to surrounding villages. Very little mail ever made it to its destination.

In another attempt at cat training, the CIA tried to use cats as spies in a program called “Acoustic Kitty,” launched by the Directorate of Science & Technology in the 1960s. After seven years and zero successful missions the project was canceled.

Do you have a pet? What is your favorite thing about your pet?

Creature Feature - Sea Otters

Hey guys it's Twistered with a Creature Feature on the Daily Explorer

Watch the video here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkI2diqIrU4

Dr. Tierney Thys help rescue a sea otter pup in this weeks Creature Feature!

Sea otters are adorable and look like they’re always having fun! But they are also extremely important. Sea otters are what is called a ‘keystone species.’ This means that their activity can have dramatic affects on the environment.

One of the otter’s favorite foods is the sea urchin and the urchin’s favorite food is kelp (seaweed) that grows in underwater forests of the ocean. If there are not enough otters to eat up all the urchins, then the urchins eat up all the kelp. Similar to forests on land, many creatures live in the kelp and need it to survive. If there’s no kelp then there isn’t a place for those sea creatures to live.

It’s also been recently shown that healthy kelp forests can help reduce carbon dioxide in our atmosphere by 12 percent!

It’s amazing to think that the happy little otter can have such a big effect on our environment!

Animal Jam HQ & A - Hermit Crab

Hey guys, it's Twistered again with a post on the Daily Explorer

Watch the video here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NXsQ_iBzIIM

Bouncing Magicseal asks Tierney Thy ‘why do hermit crabs change shells?’

Do you know what a hermit is? A hermit is a person that chooses to live
alone, often far away from other people. Unlike real hermits, hermit grabs
are very social animals that love to be around other hermit crabs. They are
called hermit crabs because each one carries its own home on its back!

In the wild, hermit crabs live in large communities that love to trade…
just like Jammers!

Hermit crabs come in many sizes. The coconut crab is about 16 inches long,
and the Ecuadoran hermit crab is only about half an inch long!

Hermit crabs live for about 15 years in the wild, but if they are kept in a
proper and safe crabitat, they can live for almost 40 years!

Jammer Tip - Heatwave Party

Hey guys it's Twistered here with an amazing tip for Jamaa

Reblogged from Daily Explorer

!tip_heat

The hottest US summer was in 1936. Temperatures were higher than 100 °F (38 °C) throughout the country and into Southern Canada! In the midwest, ground temperatures got as high as 200 °F (93 °C)! Wow! That’s hot enough to fry an egg… literally! Eggs only need a temperature of 158 °F (70 °C) to cook.

Fortunately, the heat wave ended that September and temperatures returned to normal.
Doesn’t this make you want to get to a Heatwave Party as quick as you can?
