The slow loris may look sweet and adorable, but they are, in fact, venomous! This trait is extremely rare in mammals and the loris is one of only a few animals to have this ability. It’s also the world’s only venomous primate. They have a gland on their elbow that they can lick to secrete a fluid that mixes with their saliva in order to produce their toxin. Separately, the fluids are harmless.
The slow loris has few predators because of their toxic nature, the sun bear being one of them. There is typically little interaction between the two as lorises live in trees and sun bears use dens, but their love of honey is known to create some competition around the hives.
